Anthony, this article from the WSJ last December addresses the issue of people wanting to smell first before buying. Apparently, it was a negligible factor for the web perfume merchant in the article.

Excerpt:

No Need to Sniff

The key fact from his industry research: 70% of perfume sales represent repeat business -- people who already know what they like and are simply buying refills. Of the remaining 30%, about half receive their first contact with a fragrance outside a store, through friends, magazine scent strips and other avenues, Mr. Katz figured. "You're dealing in brand names," he says. "People know what the products are."
