Can anyone with an econ background explain the meaning of GDP? Todays number said 4th quarter U.S.GDP was $7.6 trillion. That was in line with previous quarters but didn't sound right to me.

the U.S. pop used to be and--I think--still is 280 million, that comes to about $27,000 per person for the fourth quarter, and extrapolating $108,000 per person for a year. Considering that many of those persons are children or retired, that number seems ridiculously overstated.

P.S. Perhaps when they say for the "fourth quarter" they really mean the year?
