State of loyalty update.
Only one top tier OEM not using AMD and that's Dell. And even Dell is supposedly using the Alpha in a server so their is no brand loyalty any more. Compare all this to a year ago...times have really changed.
After stumbling with the Celeron this summer and continually losing market share it's nothing short of amazing that Intel has kept margins, even increasing them and matainined earnings growth. It's also a testament to the ever expanding PC market and the positive effect of the Y2K problem giving people an excuse to scrap the old and buy new.

Yes Gerald...I was not directing my comment directly to you...but to the ones who feel that Intel's solution is unacceptable ... We are stating the same thing....but discussing the "degree" to which one has to go through...to "pierce the privacy"... and the "significance" of how one accesses the Internet.

As far as the vast majority of consumers using modems: (which will change...i.e. I use cable modem at home now.) ...You'd have to look at "share of usage" by consumers....how many hours are consumers connecting one way or another...(NIC vs modem)

#1: "At work usage" could possibly exceed "at home usage" by normal consumers....I know this is a huge issue in the workplace...people surfing for fun...at the workplace.. and how do these consumers connect at work??....possibly the "majority" with NIC, not modems!

#2: What about people who connect to the Internet via a "service provider"...AOL, Prodigy, COMPUserve, etc etc.?I am not sure..but I imagine..that is "captured" in some way...

What do those...who are "worried" about Intel's solution...think about that...?

The point I am trying to make...is I don't see any big "oooh....and hahhhhhh....about NIC cards capturing this information...so why bug INTEL.....?? The majority of people are totally unaware...that privacy on CELL PHONES and the INTERNET ....is "iffy" at best...and now that credit cards are capturing and SELLING your credit card profile to marketers....start using cash...

By the way...I am in marketing...(evil)

smile....Mary
