Liquid:
AENG has to license their product, we both agree on that. In order to find a customer, they need to remove as much risk from the deal as possible. Otherwise the terms wouldn't be as favorable.

If you were a customer coming in to see the product and they were able to show you a working engine but no drawings or analysis to get margins on loads and stresses, you might think that, well, ok, they have a working prototype, but how close to failure are we in the design of the components? What if some critical component has to be redesigned in order to achieve the required life and this component requires that a dozen other components also be redesigned?

There are lots of other reasons from the standpoint of a well done system engineered product, but there is no time to go into them here.

The other point is that marketing is very important. Glossy brochures that show some solid models alongside pictures of the prototype are very powerful in selling a product. That is a side, but important benefit of using Catia and Solidworks.
