While I'd agree that the Yahoo quote about 'letting people bang on it first' is not exactly adroit PR, I'm not quite sure how else you expect a critical, transactional system to become certfied ready to handle millions of transactions.

Anyone involved in these kinds of businesses knows that you have phases of testing at multiple levels. The last phase before any full scale launch is always some kind of beta test with a limited number of people, but otherwise doing real stuff on it.

Intuit, incidentally, is behind the tax filing service on Yahoo (and this is public information).
