Ah...Here are more detailed Instructions for using your one cable modem service for more than one home computer.

If you want to utilize your ATHM or (whatever cable modem service you use) across your home network (more than one computer), you have to:

1) set up the home network, get parts at COMPUSA type store, you will need ethernet cards ($39-$100 each)(PCI or ISA check your computer for slot type and space...one ethernet card per computer except for the server who needs space for two cards!!). You'll need a network ethernet hub ($39 to $100 in cost) (with a port for each computer...if you have 5 computers, get a 5 port hub). All computers have to be connected to the hub (get ready to crawl under the house or whatever)via category 5 cable.

2) Install the ethernet card in each computer along with its associated drivers.

3) Install the network (naming the computers and making one of the computers "the proxy server"). (it needs space for two ethernet cards! Run the cables from each computer to the hub!

4) Remember The proxy server computer has to be connected to the cable modem. That means it has to have space for two ethernet cards (one for the network....and one for the cable modem).

Now have the cable modem company come in and install the computer modem on your designated PROXY SERVER computer. BTW: I recommend that you lease the modem, not buy it...so you will get upgrades and they then have to maintain it. (we had one go bad within a month!!)

5) Now that you have your cable modem installed on your designated PROXY server......go to www.dearfield.com....and buy the Wingate Proxy Server software.(approx $149)

6) Install the wingate proxy server software onto the Proxy server

7) Configure the proxy server and the browser applications on the individual computers (your netscape, AOL, IRQ, Explorer have to be told that there is a proxy server). There are instructions in the wingate software @ www.dearfield.com that tell you all about this... (in GREAT detail!!). (hey...maybe I should hit them for a commission.)

Once this is all set up....Save even more money because you can now change your AOL billing to "going through your own ISP pricing and save $10/month on billing there....put it towards the $34/month cable modem billing...".. (go into setup to do that and no more busy signals with AOL!!..instant on!!

Gotta love this cable modem....you will not believe how fast it is!!!! and the beauty of it...is you are "always connected.." no dialing, no busy signals....as long as the proxy server is on....any computer connected to it....is up and running on the cable modem

Have fun.........smiles.....Mary
