But the seeds of this were sown before the RR took over the republican party (which was around 1992?).

As I have said before, Jennifer Dunn and Steve Largent are diametrically opposed. You can only have one party platform and position, which will it be? Right now Largents side is winning. There will always be token examples of divergence from the norm on both sides, Liddy Dole might be one of those.
