Diamond group De Beers has denied its new black empowerment deal is a token gesture, and has expressed confidence in the future of the new company, Newco, which has been created by the deal. De Beers has handed over 60 percent of its stake in the high grade Marsfontein mine near Portgieterus to Newco, which is to be taken over by a consortium of black economic empowerment partners. De Beers spokesperson Tracey Peterson says the company hopes to see more and more black groups entering the diamond sector.
