Synopsis-Dell Asia & News from Dell Asia Pacific website

Uncle:
In case you ever wondered what Dell's operations looks like in Asia.
===========================================

Dell Computer Corporation has served businesses, governments, large organizations and individuals in Asia Pacific since the early 1990s. Customers' appreciation of the quality of Dell's products and services has resulted in extraordinary growth.

Revenue growth in Asia-Pacific and Japan accelerated to 49 percent versus last year. This is up from 35 percent in the first half of this year. This growth is in stark contrast to the overall industry, which grew about 2 percent.

Dell entered Asia Pacific in select markets and began investing in regional facilities, and management, service and technical personnel in 1993, with its first operations in Japan and Australia. Dell direct sales operations are currently in 12 countries in the region: Australia, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. In addition, more than 80 distributors serve 38 countries. Offices in other countries include India. Dell employs more than 1,400 staff in Asia Pacific and has the expertise to help multinational, government and corporate accounts as well as experienced individuals and small to medium businesses, implement their technology initiatives throughout the region and on a global basis. To keep up with demand in China, Dell has established the China Customer Center to mirror the manufacturing and professional functions found at the APCC. Located in Xiamen, it upholds the best practices in manufacturing, management, marketing, finance and all the other facets of the Dell model.

At the heart of Dell's Asia Pacific operations is the Asia Pacific Customer Center (APCC) in Penang, Malaysia. The 238,000 square-foot manufacturing facility opened in November 1995 and received ISO9002 certification in July 1996. Desktops, workstations, notebooks and network servers are manufactured to order for customers throughout Asia Pacific. Delivery to the customer is normally achieved within seven days of order. One of the most significant investments Dell is making worldwide is in the Internet. Its Web site, www.dell.com/ap now supports 16 country specific sites for Asia Pacific, using five languages including Chinese, Korean, Thai and Japanese.
