The internet theoretically makes possible/viable the trading of any market that opens itself up to electronic trading. Demand will be the driver once several exchanges are in competition for liquidity. This will only lead to increased oppportunity for short term trading as exchanges fight to provide more reliable and efficient execution sytems to attract volume and liquidity.

We already see the dramatic effects that ECN's have produced in the NASDAQ marketplace. The old guard is screaming blood murder to preserve their antiquated and inefficient systems. They can only blame it on daytraders so long. Soon everyone down the line will be using ECN's in favor of the older more corrupt systems.

I can hear it now..." Those poor mutual funds are losing money hand over fist by using ECN's to enter orders! no wonder 90% are underperforming the indices!"
