Most likely China wants Taiwan for its economy and jewells like UMC and TSMC and so many others. Hong Kong was a boost to their Economy and they want more.

China just took over the Spratlys Islands uncontested, and in case you are not familiar with Spratlys Island, here is what CNN says about those Islands: "Believed to be rich in oil and gas, the Spratlys consist of 190 mostly barren islands, reefs, atolls and sand bars scattered over an area of 150,000 square miles (390,000 sq km) in the South China Sea". This is a very nice chunk of land. Heard on the radio that they are also building a military base there.

With the recent mass apprehension and killing of dissidents, I think China is determined to show the world that communism is not dead.
