Betty, this shifting of margin requirements on volatile internet stocks has been going on for a few weeks. It might tone down the volatile daytrading but should have no real effect. Institutions ultimately drive the direction of the sector, their portfolios cannot match overall market returns unless they own a few of the solid internet stocks.

Bp. On the contrary,I feel reasonable margin requirements in buying certain stocks will eventually put these shares into stronger hands and make it harder for day and short-term traders to dally in these stocks, and thus increase the beta and volitility of these stocks.
Let people base their purchases of CMGI on a actual understanding of CMGI,what it does and what it's long term value is and not on the view that it's a penny stock to be leveraged and traded daily based on T.A.,margin calls, short term views, covering one's tail feathers because it's now 3 pm or a Friday and one's position has to be covered because you can't stand to hold the stock overnight.

Thanks, bp. Wonder how SCH makes these "selections"?...

Really baffling and arbitrary. For example, CMGI on the list, but not AMTD, ATHM, BCST, GNET or XCIT, let alone ZD or ZAP (or are they 100% maintenance?!).

Many (but apparently, not all) brokers are obviously scared to death of this whole sector. And it's funny: no two brokers' lists are even alike. Plus, I find this sort of thing utterly discriminatory. If I were with SCH, I'd vote with my feet.

Any securities litigators among our ranks?
