Linux Up Close: Time To Switch

Commercial Linux releases are ready for your server business.

By Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols & Eric Carr, Sm@rt Reseller

Forget Linux's hype. Forget Microsoft Corp.'s server market share.
The bottom line, according to our hands-on analysis, is that commercial Linux releases can do much more with far less than Windows NT Server can.

Comparing a Dell machine running Linux to a Mercedes with a Chevy engine shows your ignorance. That can be fixed with an open mind.

The thread isn't interested in your opinions. Show us some facts and data. You can contribute more than "get a life".

Tell us more about the Colgate case. Was it "merchants can sell or not as 'they' wish" or "merchants can sell or not as MSFT wishes"?

Your qualifications are impressive. Guess what? Nobody gives a d@mn.

"Oh, how does a cult member look?" Buy a mirror.

It never ceases to amaze me that stockholders can be so angry about open source software.

At least we agree on INTC, CSCO and DELL.

Best of luck.

Linux ... the best things in life are free.

The Best Windows File Server: Linux!

By Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols & Eric Carr, Sm@rt Reseller

NetBench 5.01 shows how well a network operating system does at the mundane task of file serving, by measuring Wintel file input/output. Natively, Linux doesn't work with DOS/Windows files, but Samba, an open-source Server Message Block (SMB) client and server that ships with all commercial Linuxes, provides that capacity. And how!

You might think that Linux would operate at a disadvantage here, but Linux kicks NT's butt.

It will be extremely difficult for the DOJ to prove harm and win their case. Personally, I don't think it matters. Superior products and technologies are a bigger threat to MSFT. NetWare, JAVA, JINI, Netscape, SUNW ...

Here is the URL for the flame thread if you don't want to contribute to this one:

Best of luck.

Linux ... where do you want to go without crashing?
