X, dear, I agree wholly that there is nothing "mere" about animals. I simply meant that we are rumored to have a few special faculties of our own. On all too many fronts, we all fall short of using these faculties. I wish I could exonerate myself here, but I have fallen flat on my own face all too often to do so.

BTW, people who invoke religion should remember that humility is a Christian virtue. Shall I SHOUT THAT STATEMENT?

I recently read something interesting about sea otters. Their fur is so dense that in one square inch of fur they have as many hairs as a human has on her entire head. I really love otters. Except for the smell. I would like to be an otter, if I were not a human, although I like being human.

I know some humans are bad, but many humans are good, and my kitties agree with me.
