Hi Cheeky! [edited] I'm asking for your opinion on frequent ISP disconnects:
Got a new Compaq which works great. My old ISP [Pacbell] connects at only 44 kbps, but is stable [no disconnects]. Found a cheaper, faster ISP [Pathlink] with good service. It connects at up to 52 kbps. But
it frequently disconnects and they told me they see a "no carrier"
message when it happens - so it's a phone line problem.

I had Pacbell [my phone company] test the line and they declared it
OK. Said they do NOT guarantee suitability of a line for internet traffic, just for voice. I guess that's why their own ISP service
works at only 44 kbps.

My guess: I'm stuck with slow Pacbell at higher cost. Cable is not
an option here. It's not that big a deal - except for changing my
e-mail address back.

Gottfried
PS: when Pathlink runs really fast, I can often force a disconnect by
jumping to e-greetings. Believe it or not. <G>
