For several months now Compaq has been saying it wants its customers to be able to purchase Compaq computers through whatever venue they want. So yes Compaq is trying to appease the customer.

Gemini:

Didn't surf the net yesterday. Regarding your question on "switching allegiances", you need to think about the future scenario. Buying on the Net will be the future. Retailers need to deal with that. It is not restricted to Computers or Dell. I believe Compaq will treat its channels as well as it can afford to be and yet making big inroads towards the "Net".

Cheers
