>>How important is it to close a disc?

Depends on the disk and what it's going to be read on.

It's crucial to close a SESSION, regardless. Not even
my CD-R drive will read an unclosed session on a multi-session
disk. Closing the disk closes the session if there is one.

Many older audio CD players will not read an unclosed
disk. For data CDs, closing the disk isn't as important provided
the sessions are closed, unless the drive predates the
multisession specs.

I don't have a current CD player. My wife is out of town with
her new car CD player. When she gets back I will try the coaster.

BTW, I have not researched this, the above is a collection of
my impressions, easily wrong. Don't count on any of it.
