JDM, our messages must have crossed in the cyber.

Your right, regarding your the analogies to other forms of comms and transportation. But in those sectors, you'll find situations where hospitality offers are made, free pick up by the hotel at the airport, for one, and free hotel stays at the casino, being another, where the merchant has far more to gain by a little sugar, than by not trying to entice you at all.

I don't personally think that it will be free, at least not soon, but I try to anticipate the hairbrained approaches that I'm sure some will attempt. Along these lines, it's not far fetched that certain access methods could become free, dependent on access permissions and prohibitions that a large retailer may impose in software, say, that would enable you to access a certain slice of the 'net, especially those which are owned by that retailer group, but not others. Whoa! Now, there's a thought, eh?

Think of all the coupons that the shopper of the house must manage, the marketing relationship combinations between the Disney's of the world and Telcos, hotels and car rentals, the frequent flyer programs which IMO are bull-doody, but if you don't take advantage of them you lose.... there is no end to the gimmicks and hooks that American merchandisers will attempt in order to snare you into their "webs."

It's getting late, and I'm starting not to make too much sense. Later, JDM,

Regards, Frank C.

Okay, one more item... I recalled reading this earlier.

The alliance of Hanover Direct and Excite, as shown below, is one step away from offering the incentives we're talking about.

I could easily see them offering a discount on either narrowband or broadband access charges (what's a few bands among friends) through its ISP(s) of choice, or some kind of minimum purchase formula to offset a totally free access arrangement.

Or, perhaps, and I'm certain that some will love to jump on this one, they will offer "free" any-distance Voice over the Internet service instead, or at least the long distance portion will be free, citing how this will allow the consumer to save over thirty, forty dollars per month, or more, where international calling is concerned.

It's coming, in one denomination, or form, or another, but it's coming.
