In the second case one might be selling gold that does not exist and is not in circulation.

Now I could understand if someone took out a "naked short" position on gold, but I would almost guarantee you that any hedge fund manager worth his salt would have protective call options protecting that short position. Maybe some mavericks might be completely naked, but that would utterly stupid for a large institution performing a carry trade using gold as a source of working capital.

And people aren't normally allowed to sell naked short unless they have the means/credit limit to back it up. Of course, we know from LTCM that Nobel Prize winners are special people... :0)
