Your argument is circuitous. To be a creator does not mean you have to start from scratch. To change the world does not mean you must trigger an idea that has no ties to any that has gone before. To be an individual does not require a collective. To have rights does not mean you subvert others rights at the point of a gun. To have freedom means you must exercise the responsibility to protect it from thugs and looters, yes. But that does not mean those rights are not yours automatically -- they are -- you must defend them from the Attila's and Mystics from time to time, that's all. From the individual power seekers who live to subvert others to their will through guile or force.

Free men are constantly at war. It is a War of Ideas.

Let me in here. Fortunately for Edison and Franklin there was not so much out there worth learning. There was still room to think up things that had not yet been invented, both gadgets and theories (Edison Effect, bipolar electricity, identity of lightning and static electricity)

Both were self-educated working men, both ended with many honorary doctorates. Both advanced and protected mankind, and made them wealthier than they ever could have been without them. Both were strictly unnecessary. If they had rolled over and gone back to sleep, instead of rising to the work of a man, the would would have caught up, and maybe even identified the electron as having a positive, rather than a negative charge, and used AC rather than DC at the start.
