David-
Thanks for your detailed explanation on that matter. I have seen a couple of level II logs, and I would guess what it really means to be "at the ask" or bid is the only realistic number an MM puts out...

for example, on the one stock I own: best bid and ask is .75 x.87

Bid Ask Bid x Ask Date Time _______ ___________ ________ ________ __________ __________
PGON 0.750 1.000 25 x 25 01/29/99 15:58:47 O F
BACH 0.730 0.930 25 x 25 01/29/99 15:57:37 O F
WIEN 0.730 0.870 25 x 25 01/29/99 15:31:25 O F
NITE 0.720 0.870 25 x 25 01/29/99 15:06:52 O F
SHRP 0.720 0.880 25 x 25 01/29/99 15:06:46 O F
MHMY 0.720 0.975 25 x 25 01/29/99 15:06:07 O F
HRZG 0.700 0.900 25 x 25 01/29/99 15:02:16 8009667022 O F
USCT 0.720 0.920 25 x 25 01/29/99 14:47:20 O F
FAHN 0.680 0.880 25 x 25 01/29/99 13:54:01 O F
FRAN 0.375 1.500 50 x 5 01/29/99 07:40:05 O F
GVRC 0.510 1.250 25 x 5 01/29/99 07:40:05 O F
HILL 0.500 1.063 50 x 5 01/29/99 07:40:05 O F
MASH 0.375 0.750 50 x 25 05/09/98 11:50:26 O F

So in this case, PGON is the only MM "at the bid," while WIEN and NITE are at "at the ask"? The rest of the MM's are either so far off the mark as to be effectively not trading the stock, or just a little bit, so that when the MM's at the bid or ask run out of/buy enough of the shares at that price, they will be next?

Sorry folks for not using a WOOD log, but I have no access to Level II, and got this log over the weekend about another stock I own.

Thanks--
Rick

David, Thanks for your explanation of your Level 2 quotes. Have you ever had access to other trading systems such as Island, SOES, Instanet or Selectnet? Also are you aware of upbooks, downbooks, and trading volume to size?
