Small business wary
of e-commerce

By Emma Connors
Small and medium-sized businesses are extremely wary of electronic commerce, according to research published by the Federal Government, which has revealed that many organisations are concerned about being drawn into a "technology black hole".

The Australian Electronic Business Network is a cross-government initiative designed to help usher the SME sector towards electronic commerce. Attitudinal research commissioned by the AeB.N suggests that its would-be beneficiaries are still be convinced.

"Although e-commerce is a widely recognised concept, the study suggests its significance is not fully understood by SMEs, nor do they have a clear understanding of its potential," note the authors of the report, Taking the Plunge.

Many of the one million businesses that make up the local SME sector are suspicious of promises made by technology.

"Many SMEs have not experienced . . . substantial benefits directly accruing from an IT investment," the report said. "Technology is often a grudge expenditure which merely keeps them in business. Not surprisingly, it may be deferred until is unavoidable . . .

"A residual fear among many business managers is the potential for new technology, particularly software to consume cash year after year, as upgrades and modifications are made necessary by people and developments beyond their influence."
