Gue, Welcome Aboard!

I can't readily give you investment advice, but I can point out a few things concerning your list.

Ciena is a maker of networking equipment, not components in the traditional sense.

>>2: Equipment Makers: ... Cisco: Candidates: Lucent, Northern Telecom<<

If you were to consider CIEN on your list, as you did in your message, then you'd include them here too, along with TLAB, NT, NN, CSCO, LU, NT, ALA, etc.

>>#3: Bandwidth Companies...Candidates: Global Crossing, Winstar Communications, Loral <<

In a comparative sense, Loral is a maker of systems [many of which are satellite and space-oriented] that support bandwidth delivery, but it is not a company that is into the bandwidth services sector, per se. Like so many others, this could be left to subjective treatment and individual interpretation. IMO, they make bandwidth enabling systems and equipment in a rather esoteric space, pun intended, rather than a bandwidth delivery services provider in the more terrestrially-bound, and generalized class of companies mentioned here.

While Level 3 [LVLT] is a provider of higher level services, it also crosses over [under?] into the realm of bandwidth provider. They will compete on some levels with the likes of ATHM in your services category, and compete with the usual band of other ISPs in the future, as in the delivery of next generation Internet services, and enhanced forms of multimedia products on the 'net, as well.

Continuing in the b-w sector, LVLT was characterized as one of the domestic fiber barons recently, along with QWST, indicating that they are putting in a large fiber infrastructure along railroad- and utilities- rights of way.

I think that MFNX and GBLX should be included in that group by this time, as well as WMB, for sure... now that their waiting period with WCOM is over.

IIXC also fits this mold, although they have not received the same level of mention in this regard as the others, for some reason. Probably because of their other services of a more conventional genre, which obfuscates the fact that they are fiber rich.
--------

These comprise only a few clarifications and corrections I've noted to some of the entries on your list, and they are only my opinions.

Others will provide you with their favorites in each category. Of that, you can almost be certain. [smiles]

Regards, Frank Coluccio
