There are a few cheap ways to determine a live form a dead finger. A couple of these can be designed with little or no additional hardware compared to the stuff needed to do the finger scan: 1] you look for the blood pulse - a UV photodiode can "see" through skin well enough to pick up a pulse. Some relatively low cost medical devices have used this technique for several years to measure blood flow characteristics with a much higher degree of accuracy than is needed here. 2] Electromagnetic - using an HMR chip that costs just a few bucks each (made by Honeywell SSEC and others) you can tell the presence of a live finger. There are probably other techniques to do the same thing that I am not aware of.
