Why was the unanimous vote by Democrat Senators against making the testimony public a blunder of historic proportions ?

Simply because once the vote on witnesses was lost, the desire to keep the testimony from being public is indefensible.

The vote on witnesses could be "explained" as a desire to bring the trial to an end, but the vote to keep the testimony from being public can only be seen as desire to protect Clinton.

Indeed, the salacious material is already public, and the prosecutors have vowed that most of their questions would not be related to sex. Their line of questioning is obviously going to be aimed at the obstruction of Justice charge.

Again, I am sorry to hear that this position sounds irrational to you.
