<<In addition to the economies of scale barrier you discussed, its not
insignificant that you can't just mail order from Acme a kit full of
"Suspension Manufacturing and Testing Eqipment" nor can you go to Kelly Sevices for suspension engineers, plant managers and even trained manufacturing employees.>>

No doubt about it...I tend to write in a rambling style on these boards as I hardly have time to post let alone compose the writings in any decent way... so I guess some points just don't go from head to keyboard....
Anyway, anyone who's been to the HTCH plant in Hutchinson knows that there is a substantial tool and die/design area for the manf of many of the specialized machines they use (hell they're in this Milw market a couple times a year recruiting employees and it seems their emphasis is the tool and die types...Milw has a pretty good pool of those guys FWIW)...they do carry alot of IP and patents and I'm sure thats a deterent to add to the barriers to entry pile we've been discussing...as far as the engineers and manf personal that was a huge reason they built that Eau Claire plant in Eau Claire IMO...there is alot of technical talent there that went unemployed when Cray went away in Chippewa Falls and SCI/Steve Chens company folded up in Eau Claire..EC is also fairly close to Mnpls/St Paul were there is a great pool of those types although I'm sure that labor market is as tight as everywhere else....FWIW
