>>So it looks like we agree that one large C drive is preferable for the primary OS load/installation barring significant over ruling factors.

Misunderstanding is a great danger of this imperfect medium.

No, we don't agree on this
one. A FAT16 partition is too small even at its max of
2GB, and I'd prefer it under 1GB myself, since 2GB IS too
small for me and I'd rather have NTFS anyhow. I was
arguing that the C partition CAN'T be the main OS partition
because (for me at least) it has to be FAT16.

I don't like to hide partitions either. It makes you dependent
on one more essential piece of software that you HAVE to have.
I have enough of those. Whatever Dave's reasons are, that one
is sufficient for me.

I am sitting here as I write this looking at NT Disk Manager
(on another PC)
showing a brand new unpartitioned 16473MB disk and scratching
various anatomical extremities wondering what to do next.

In particular I've concluded that, since it takes the ATA
hotfix (or maybe SP4) to access the whole disk, it would
probably not be the world's best plan to make it one big
C partition with NT on it. If I had to reinstall (and
eventually I will), how could I apply the hotfix or
the service pack? I do not want to deal with having half
a partition unreachable, even if it works part of the time.
Sooner or later I'll have 17GB of toast.

I think Dave has faced a similar problem with an 11.5 gb
primary master. Seems to me he has an 8 gb C partition.
Now I think I know why <gg>. Dave, if you read this,
any comments?

It's absurd that MS keeps on putting out NT with only
SP1 applied. This will be a problem till it comes with
SP4 (and I couldn't find a ref. to the ata fix in SP4).

>>If you can control the machines you get bios boot selection will be around for awhile IMO.

I can't change the machines I already have, which is what I had
in mind as much as anything. However, that problem will
take care of itself in due course, and I already have solutions
for those machines. I'm rethinking that point, which is what
caused me to think about a 17GB C partition.
