Saju Chacko, are you sure you are not really Eckhard Pfeiffer trying to bring down Dell again before we blow away earnings.

Saju;

RE<<...well she called twice... and both times customer service told her that she had to open up the laptop and diagnose the problem herself with customer service on the phone...>>

Well, yeah. I mean, this is not asking too much. In fact, I believe you'll find that the troubleshooting trail for disk related problems mentions that the owner should check the connections( power & interface cable ) to ensure they are secure. There are less imposing steps preceding this one --> CHKDSK, FIXDISK, etc., which may solve the problem and prevent data from being lost or corrupted( if this has not already been done ). 95% of the time, the solution to disk problems are quite straightforward and have a simple solution. The other 5% of the time...well, hopefully you've maintained backups of important data.

Work with them, they'll get it straightened out. If the disk is in fact trashed, you'll get a replacement.

I'm outta here for the Super Bore!!!

I sympathize with your problematic DELL laptop. I have a Lattitude LMP 166, and taking out the HDD is actually dead easy, if that's any consolation. You just remove two screws on the bottom that hold the plastic cover in place, then remove the plastic cover, and the HDD slides out like works-in-a-drawer. It really is a 2 minute job.

But I agree with you, more complete service should be provided on a new machine!!
