My feelings about the right to abortion are not entirely simple. I do know that I feel an abortion of a cluster of cells with the potential to develop into a human being, that is to say an early abortion, is quite different than an abortion of a 24 week old fetus. I also know that it is horrible that vicious or callous people who don't want children, hate them even, give birth to them anyway, and then neglect and torture and sometimes kill their babies. Or their toddlers. Or their children; and I would like society to make it easier, not harder, for them to choose not to give birth. It's no good saying they should put them up for adoption. They won't, mostly. They will just make them suffer forever. Here are some interesting statistics. They are from 1989, but I'm sure the picture painted by the statistics is roughly the same, even if the specific numbers are now outdated. If anyone has an update on them, I'd be interested in having it. I found these stats in a publication called "Hippocrates," in its September/October 1989 issue. It is the 6 versus the 140, 000 I am calling to everyone's attention, or to the attention, anyway, of those who care. ................................. 1.5 million: Number of Mexican women each year who have abortions, all of which are illegal140,000: Number of Mexican women who die of complications ................................. 1.6 million: Number of American women each year who have abortions, most of which are legal6: Number of American women who die of complications [The magazine said "American women." I know it should have said "U.S. Citizens."]
