Thought I'd throw this out to see what anyone else thought of this. I did a business search on the "Transium" site (Transium.com) for Perfumania and under the heading of "strategy" came the following article. Also, a company called MK Global Ventures recently injected $600,000.00 in funding for HPSI as a result of the announcement. There's been some insider buying of this company also(Nasdaq:EROX,EROXC). I find it interesting that this article came up under the Perfumania search yet they are not named in the article (and under the heading of "strategy" no less). Human pheromones in Perfumania's fragrances? "Human Pheromone Sciences Moves To Spread Patented Technology Chemical Market Reporter 01/04/99 By Peter Landau Human Pheromone Sciences Inc. (HPSI) has signed an agreement under which its patented synthesized human pheromone compounds will be supplied to a major global beauty and cosmetics company. Confidentiality agreements prevent HPSI from revealing the company's name, says William Horgan, president and chairman of HPSI. He expects his company to earn revenues from the licensing deal by the beginning of the second quarter of next year. "This agreement marks an extremely significant milestone for our company in that it represents the initial expansion of our patented technology beyond our own corporate boundaries," Mr. Horgan says. "One of our strategic objectives is to expand the use of our proprietary human pheromone technology by working closely with consumer products companies that are leaders in their particular markets. Clearly, this agreement fits the criteria we had previously established." HPSI is also reorganizing its sales force, selling structure and sales management in the wake of disappointing third quarter results. "We launched an additional fragrance last year called Inner Realm," Mr. Horgan says. "So we were going up against pipeline fill--this year versus last year. Inner Realm was executed poorly in the marketplace. We are taking back a lot of the Inner Realm inventory." With new licensing agreements and a restructuring of its marketing strategy, HPSI hopes a new cadre of people will help spread the word about pheromones and dispel the myths that still discredit the science. When HPSI was established in 1989, originally as Erox Corporation, it set out to identify, isolate and synthesize human pheromones. Synthesizing human pheromones took several years. When the company started, the scientific community was unconvinced that humans even possessed pheromones. Pheromones are chemicals emitted by animals for communication. HPSI's research discovered that humans indeed have pheromones and possess a functioning vomeronasal organ (VNO), the transducer of the pheromones to the human brain. The VNO is located just inside the nostril. Pheromones are not an aphrodisiac and do not attract the opposite sex. Rather, they make a person wearing them feel calmer and more relaxed. HPSI presently puts out Realm fragrances for both men and women, as well as toiletry products. "We are doing some testing with fabric and environmental products, candles and things for the home environment," Mr. Horgan says. "If things can make you smell better, why shouldn't the products possess something that can also make you feel better?" asks Mr. Horgan. Pheron Pharmaceuticals, a company spun off from HPSI, has signed a deal with Akzo Nobel in Europe. Akzo Nobel has filed an investigational new drug application for using human pheromones to ease the discomfort from PMS. Mr. Horgan sees great potential in the medical and pharmaceutical communities for applications using human pheromones. Firmenich provides HPSI with the essential oils for its perfumes. Realm for Women is an Oriental fragrance with top notes of Sicilian mandarin, Italian cassia and Egyptian tagetes. Its woody notes are softened with honey and vanilla. Realm for Men uses watery top notes of galbanum, bergamot, lavender and California oranges and mandarin. Blended with juniperberry, bois de rose and litsea cubea, spiced with ginger, sandalwood and gaiacwood, and mingling with patchouli, it creates a deep, long-lasting dry scent. HPSI distributes its products nationally and in several countries outside the US, but the international market has yet to be seriously developed. "We had some testing done in Germany, and that has really created a lot of interest in some countries in Europe," say Mr. Horgan. HPSI sees significant potential in Asia and plans to have some form of distribution there in the coming year." Copyright 1999 Schnell Publishing
