Exactly. There are many motives out there, but that one is near the top of my list.
A company like Barrick could probably survive with 230 Gold, and along the way pick up other less well financed or distressed producers for a song. Look at TVX, currently under heavy pressure even with 285. Gold.

When the shakeout is over and the price of AU explodes, the Barricks
of the industry end up the BIG winners.
