FEB 3, 1999, M2 Communications - Swindon, UK - As part of its commitment to bringing advanced wireless solutions to the market, Lucent Technologies today announced it has joined the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Forum. This international industry body aims to create a global wireless protocol specification to bring advanced services and Internet access to digital mobile telephone users, regardless of the network protocol used.

Chuck Parrish, WAP Forum Board Chairman, said: "We are pleased to welcome Lucent Technologies to the WAP Forum. Lucent's background as a player in every global wireless standard makes it a valuable addition to the WAP Forum's membership."

Nitin Shah, Lucent's Vice President for Wireless Data Networks, said: "This is an extremely exciting time to be in the wireless data market. To be competitive you have to be innovative, but innovation alone will not guarantee commercial success. We believe that our customers will benefit most from solutions that take advantage of the power of the Internet. For this reason, we have decided to become a member of the WAP Forum."

He added: "We believe the development of an application protocol that blends the Internet with wireless technologies will benefit every facet of the industry, including users, network operators and service providers. Lucent has a great deal of experience in providing solutions for every wireless telecommunication standard, and as such we are ideally placed to work with the WAP Forum to evolve the Wireless Application Protocol."

Lucent is a major player in many of the standards organisations throughout the world, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the European Telecommunication Standard Institute (ETSI) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). In the wireless data arena, Lucent Technologies has leadership roles in the IEEE 802.11 and ETSI BRAN (Broadband Radio Access Network) committees. Lucent is co-founder of the UMTS Forum and is a board member of the Wireless Data Forum, the Universal Wireless Communications Consortium, and the CDMA Development Group.

In addition, the company is participating in a number of programmes aimed at developing the next generation of mobile communications systems, including the Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) programme and the European Strategic Programme for Information Technology (ESPRIT).

WAP specifies Internet content and advanced telephony services access on digital cellular phones and other wireless terminals. The WAP Forum has published a global wireless protocol specification for all wireless networks that will be presented to appropriate standards bodies. WAP enables manufacturers, network operators, content providers and application developers to offer compatible products and secure services on all digital devices and networks. This results in greater economies of scale and universal access to information. WAP Forum membership is open to all industry participants, and the WAP version 1.0 specification and membership details are available at wapforum.org

Lucent Technologies designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronic components. FEB 3, 1999, M2 Communications - UNITED KINGDOM -- Lucent Technologies is holding its 1999 SYSTIMAX structured cabling solutions Network R/Evolution Conference to reveal the latest developments and innovations in copper, fibre, wireless and data networking technology in office cabling infrastructure.

The conference, taking place on Thursday 4th March in London, UK, will help network managers learn more about the latest advances in network cabling infrastructures, taking them through the gigabit era as well as looking ahead to terabit speeds.

Senior experts from Lucent Technologies and its research and development arm, Bell Laboratories, will lead a discussion on the vital networking issues of today and tomorrow. They will be joined by independent industry experts offering their perspective on current developments, including reports on the progress of Category 6 standards approval, following the International standards meeting being held in Mexico at the end of January.

Key issues to be discussed include:
* The convergence of voice, data and multimedia on to a single cabling infrastructure * Meeting the demands of the R/Evolutionary broadband network * The arrival of the gigabit era for data networking * Preparing for high speed LANs - a report on independent end-user research * An update on the standards for high speed networks * Wireless connectivity for user mobility

Tony Goss, managing director, Lucent GCM, commented: "We are in the midst of a global network revolution and network managers need to acquire networking 'know-how' in order to make the right infrastructure decisions for the future."

The conference will address the questions network managers have about high performance cabling options, as recently revealed in independent research commissioned by Lucent's Global Commercial Markets group. The research findings were published in its 'Infrastructure Report on Preparing for High Speed LANs' and will be highlighted during the conference.

Goss continued "Lucent is well placed to give network managers the knowledge they need about networking trends. We have a unique perspective because we offer the enabling technologies behind both public and private networks and active and passive components. We can help network managers build a communications infrastructure to give their business the competitive edge for the future."

FEB 3, 1999, M2 Communications - FARNBOROUGH, U.K. -- Lucent Technologies and DaimlerChrysler Aerospace UK have won a major order for 45 DEFINITY(r) Enterprise Communication Servers (ECS) from the Royal Navy. The contract is part of a vessel refurbishment programme which begins in January,1999, and is due for completion by the end of March, 2002.

The DEFINITYs will be "ruggedised" - a modification programme designed to prepare the systems to withstand operational conditions such as constant on-board vibrations - before being installed in a range of vessels, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and submarines.

Royal Navy senior professional technical officer Roger Ferguson said: "The DEFINITY was chosen after a rigorous tendering process which involved five leading PBX manufacturers. We were particularly impressed with the Lucent and DaimlerChrysler solution because it provided a flexible platform that has been tried and tested for many years by the US Navy. It also means our future on-board communications will be interoperable with other NATO allies."

The Royal Navy contract was headed by DaimlerChrysler Aerospace UK which will provide the project management, overseeing both the delivery of Lucent Technologies hardware and operator training. Installation will be carried out by Vector Data Systems.
