One point that needs to be made when discussing rights is that the concept of rights is continually evolving. Persons in any given age tend to view that age's definition of rights as fixed and absolute; I doubt that Jefferson saw any contradiction between his slaveholding and the words he wrote.

Like all evolutionary processes, this is one of attempts, some erroneous, and refinements; some claim rights that others do not acknowledge, they debate, others observe, gradually consensus emerges and we move on.

I would not agree that there is a right to employment, but I would agree that there is a right not to be arbitrarily excluded from employment. Out of thousands of such "minor" refinements will grow the future's definition of rights.
