Yes, these people did exist. However, they do not exist now. Perhaps I am mistaken, but I thought that a rationalist philosophy would preclude the belief that beloved dead people remembered act as protective spirits.

So what are you saying? If it is that immortality is real because the dearly departed live on in our memories--our souls--then I would agree. Again, however, this does not seem like a rationalist's argument.
