I don't really think the poor are noble. I just do not believe that the circumstances of one's birth should cast a large shadow on one's entire future, as they do when poor children do not get the health care, nutrition, education and general nurturing which would allow them to overcome the accidents of fate which brought them into the world classified as poor people.

On the subject of state-supported welfare: have you considered the possibility that the motivation behind such systems may not be entirely altruistic? We would not be the first to conclude that it is cheaper to subsidize the basic needs of the poor than to suppress the violence that tends to break out when those needs are not met. Bread and circuses, and all that stuff...
