Slavery was illegal in France, but Sally was a teenager. If she left the protection of her home, she would have had the choice of being a laundress or a prostitute. Like any other young, uneducated woman of the day, or even today. What freedom do women have in, say, Iran or Afghanistan? They are not slaves, but are they free?
