Yes, impeachment/trial was intended to undo an election, but the point is that undoing an election is not something a Congress should do frivolously or out of pique.

I and others have argued convincingly that taking impeachment/trial lightly is exactly what the Congressional Republicans are doing.

Take this example: Say Clinton had, in direct disobedience of federal law, sold arms to Iran to fund an illegal and covert war in Central America.

In that case, I too would be calling for Clinton's impeachment/trial, but as far as I know, he hasn't done this. Reagan or persons in his administration did, but the Democratically-controlled Congress didn't impeach him. That suggests that the then Democratically-controlled House had a great deal more respect for the Constitution than the 1998 Republican House members.

The impeachment/trial of Clinton for lies about sex is a knife into the heart of our form of government. The nation may recover if we can stop the bleeding soon, but I'm afraid we'll be in intensive care for quite a while.
