but I could imagine it just takes a few new lenses from the stepper companies to use an existing Cymer product?

No change in stepper optics will be required. 300mm scanners will require new stage designs to make them faster if throughput is to be maintained and higher power lasers - 6000 series and its offspring.

Clark,

The following stats come from my rapidly failing memory :-( so I welcome any corrections from those with better memories or an easily accessed source.

1. Today, less than 5% of the process steps require DUV.

2. In the 300mm world, a much larger %age will require DUV or smaller wavelengths.

3. None of the lithography installed base is 300mm capable.

4. While each wafer has the potential to yield at least twice as many chips, it's probable that there will be yield problems during the first couple years.

5. I would expect the existing base of tools using CYMI lasers in 8" fabs would be relegated to trailing edge technology fabs rather than scavenged for use in state of the art steppers.

In short, the move to 12" will require a complete bottom up build of the fab lines including new steppers, the bulk of which will be DUV.

I don't think I'm telling you anything that you don't already understand much better than I. So I suspect that I've missed the gist of your question. Feel free to take another shot at asking... ;-)

Ian.

How does the move to 12 inch fabs effect Cymer? It isn't immediately clear to me that it is much impact.
