chances are good that the rally continues:

+ France's AXA-UAP has agreed to buy U.K. insurer Guardian Royal Exchange through its Sun Life & Provincial Holdings subsidiary for $5.67 billion in cash and stock. As part of the deal, Sun Life will sell Guardian Royal's U.S. unit to Liberty Mutual for $1.465 billion.

+ U.S. Commerce Department said Gross Domestic Product in the fourth quarter rose 5.6 percent on an annualized basis, sharply beating Wall Street expectations. Economists have become more bullish about the U.S.. Bruce Steinberg, the chief U.S. economist at Merrill Lynch called the U.S. economy ''the wonder of the world.''

+ Wall Street heard that inflation remained at bay while economic momentum jumped with the release of the Employment Cost Index and strong orders for durable goods (big-ticket items) in December.
