Getchell was for sale for more than a year, analysts said.
The only surprise was who the buyer was. Some analysts speculate
Denver-based Newmont Mining Corp., Getchell's next-door neighbor
and North America's largest gold company, may try to top Placer's
bid.
Placer and Barrick remain potential buyers. Both sell gold
on forward contracts, providing steady cash flow from above-
market prices. Newmont has less cash for acquisitions because it
doesn't sell gold on forward contracts.

Takeovers Expected

While exploration is set to drop -- particularly in heavily
mined countries such as Australia and Canada -- spending on
takeovers of companies hit hard by the price drop could rise.
Mining companies already spend almost three times as much on
acquisitions as they do on exploration.

Hope you find these interesting & have a nice day
