"i think in five years you will be able to talk on the internet to a computer made image of a person"

Compaq is calling it Face Works. It will be sooner than five years. EP was talking to his own 3D image last November at CPQ conference.

RS,
Well, consider strategies and compare buying a new $500 box each year that has "most" of the bells and whistles... and allows face to face, streaming video, and the works. For a mere 500 per yr one stays "fairly" current with hardware and able to handle most of the prevailing popular software. Buying more expensive systems with "advanced" features is like buying SUVs with MANY extras... the depreciation factor is enormous, and the relative computing power is easily overtaken by the time factor in probably 2 years or less.

Yes, CPQ will build and offer... but note their earnings report--- coast of goods sold was higher in 98 than 97. Possibly because they sold so many sub 1000 boxes and made less margin? Or exactly why is the cost of goods so high comparably? Who will answer these type questions?
