Samsung Electronics Taking Command of
Next-Generation High-Speed DRAM Market

** Mass Production of Rambus (TM) DRAM Starts Up **

Samsung is leading the market for the chips that will replace synchronous DRAM.
-
Initial Rambus (TM) DRAM production is set at 500,000 chips a month.
-
Samsung has started receiving volume orders from leading PC OEMs.

Seoul, South Korea - January, 18, 1999 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., has
started mass production of Rambus (TM) DRAMs, the next-generation standard
memory device. The company has gained a leading position in the market for
memory chips that will replace synchronous DRAM.

The Rambus (TM) DRAM is expected to be used as main memory in 30% of
new PCs this year. The worldwide Rambus (TM) DRAM market is forecast to
reach US $2.6 billion this year, and soar to US $13.5 billion in 2000. Early in the
next century, over half of all memory chips will be Rambus (TM) DRAM.

Initially, Samsung Electronics will mass-produce 72Mbit and 144Mbit densities
of the Rambus (TM) DRAM. In the first half of this year, monthly output of
72Mbit and 144Mbit Rambus DRAM in 64Mbit equivalence will be around
500,000 chips, but as the market firms up in the second half, the company
plans to expand production to 5 million chips a month.

This year, the Rambus (TM) DRAM and the synchronous DRAM will both be
used as a main memory solution, but starting from the year 2000, the Rambus
(TM) DRAM is expected to become the principal solution used for PC main
memory.

Samsung Electronics completed development of its 72Mbit Rambus (TM)
DRAM in July of 1998, followed by the 144Mbit Rambus (TM) DRAM
development last November. The company has gained a strong position in the
memory market despite an intense competition.

Samsung's new mass-produced devices satisfy all the latest specifications for
Rambus (TM) DRAMs. Last December, Samsung shipped 72Mbit-based
Rambus (TM) modules to leading PC OEMs in the US and Europe. Those
modules were proved to operate flawlessly in the PC environment by those
customers and also by Rambus Inc., so Samsung Electronics decided to
accelerate its initial production schedule and increase its production volume.

This year, Samsung Electronics expects to complete development of the
second-generation Rambus (TM) DRAM with next generation process
technology. The new version will be smaller and more price-competitive than the
first-generation version. The company also plans to introduce 288Mbit Rambus
(TM) DRAM.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., consists of three main business
units:
- Multimedia & Home Appliances
- Semiconductors
- Information & Telecommunications.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a US $17 billion (1998) flagship company of
Korean-based Samsung Group, is a world leader in electronics, with operations
in more than 50 countries and 70,000 employees worldwide.
