Nortel announces new SS7/IP Gateway

The following PR describes the new gateway product. The following excerpt caught my attention. Perhaps, some of you can educate me if this product really has any new features.

Through the interface, the IPS7 architecture enables bi-directional signaling while insulating the two
disparate networks from each other. This allows the SS7/IP gateway to meet the rigid requirements of
the SS7 PSTN signaling environment, and the dynamic nature of the IP world, without conflict. In this
way, IPS7 allows carriers to assemble VoIP networks that support the full range of SS7 intelligent
capabilities, while isolating the SS7 network from unknown IP sources.

Nortel Networks Announces Next Generation SS7/IP
Signaling Gateway Application

PR Newswire - February 02, 1999 11:50

SS7/IP gateway delivers large scale, carrier-class PSTN/IP integration

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL)
today announced the deployment of a large-scale, carrier-class SS7/IP signaling gateway application
on their advanced signaling engine--the Signaling Server platform. Designed as a true signaling
integrator, the SS7/IP signaling gateway is optimized for emerging services such as Voice over Internet
Protocol (VoIP). This advanced application reaches beyond simple SS7 over IP transport by
delivering seamless intelligent services between the PSTN and IP worlds. The SS7/IP signaling
gateway was placed into trials for a major U.S. competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) in the
fourth quarter of 1998.

The SS7/IP signaling gateway introduces a next generation network element that provides true
integration between IP networks and traditional circuit-switched TDM signaling. Appearing as a
fully-transparent SS7 network node, the SS7/IP signaling gateway enables key operational attributes
to the IP network, such as CLASS services; access to special prefix services (i.e.1-800 toll-free
dialing); and the ability to intelligently route or reroute traffic between voice circuits.

Network interoperability is supported through IPS7, a new protocol initiative that encompasses all
SS7 and IP signaling protocols within a single, standardized ''open architecture.'' IPS7 fully integrates
more than 15 protocols, including ISUP (phase one) and TCAP variants (phase two) to implement
true carrier-class voice-over-IP (VoIP). For example, an ISUP message (for call setup from the
PSTN to the IP network) is packaged into an IP signaling protocol and tunneled directly to a call
controller. The call controller then completes the ISUP call setup, enabling the voice circuit. This is
achieved through the SS7/IP signaling gateway's bi-directional interface.

In future releases, the
architecture will recognize the need and legitimacy of IP messages by establishing thresholds and
performance factors.

The SS7/IP signaling gateway represents a new class of advanced signaling functionality available to
customers as a co-resident Signaling Server application. Applications co-resident on the flexible,
scalable Signaling Server platform will enable customers to attack equipment and operational costs,
while providing services for next generation networks.
