Compaq Stakes Claim for Enterprise Computing Leadership

Delivers Tru64(tm) Unix(R), World's Fastest Dual-Processor Server, World's
Fastest Workstation and Extends OpenVMS and NonStop Integrity Roadmaps

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 1999-- Building on the momentum of last week's record
earnings announcement, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ - news) today further
demonstrated its commitment to global enterprise customers by delivering new, Alpha-based servers
that shatter UNIX performance and price/performance barriers, world record-setting Alpha-based
workstations and outstanding mission-critical UNIX products and capabilities targeted at Internet and
Internet-driven markets. Compaq also announced the strengthening of its NonStop Integrity UNIX
carrier-grade capabilities and its commitment to provide updates to its OpenVMS customers over the
next five years.

''Today's announcements are further proof that Compaq means business in mission-critical enterprise
computing,'' said John T. Rose, Senior Vice President and Group General Manager, Enterprise
Computing Group, Compaq Computer Corporation. ''If there is one thing that customers should take
away from today's announcements, it is that Compaq is committed to being the industry's premier
mission-critical global enterprise computing systems, solutions and services supplier.''

Compaq unveiled the world's fastest single- and dual-processor server, the Compaq AlphaServer DS20,
which boasts 64-bit Alpha Power at an entry-level price. Configured with one processor, the Compaq
AlphaServer DS20, which is priced comparable to the Sun E250, turned in a record SPECfp95 result of
58.7, nearly three times the performance of the Sun E250. Configured with two processors, the DS20
server executed the SPECfp95 faster than any HP, IBM and Sun system, regardless of the number of
processors(1). For more information on the Compaq AlphaServer DS20 please visit
compaq.com.

Compaq revealed more of its plans for the Alpha processor by announcing the world's fastest
workstation, the Compaq Professional Workstation XP1000 -- the first member of Compaq's
AlphaPowered(tm) Extreme Performance product line. The Compaq Professional Workstation XP1000
combines superior processing power of the Alpha 21264 processor with PowerStorm graphics and a
high-bandwidth systems architecture to deliver unparalleled performance for customers running
power-hungry applications on Tru64 UNIX or Microsoft Windows NT. With a SPECint95 rating of 26 and
SPECfp95 of 52, the new Alpha 21264 processor is at the top of its class in both integer and floating
point performance, handily outscoring Sun's fastest UltraSPARC 2 processor(2). This performance is
reflected in the XP1000's top scores in computer-aided design, computer-aided engineering and 3D
graphics benchmarks. For more information on the Compaq Professional Workstation XP1000 please

Compaq announced major ISV support for its UNIX operating system, which it renamed Compaq Tru64
UNIX. In addition, Compaq introduced Tru64 UNIX V4.0F as well as breakthrough UNIX clustering
software TruCluster V1.6 and other UNIX software and tool kits, and offered customers a preview of its
upcoming Tru64 UNIX and TruCluster software V5.0. For more information on the Tru64 UNIX products

Compaq also announced that its carrier-grade NonStop Integrity S-series systems will run on Tru64
UNIX and be powered by Alpha in late 2001. Compaq's NonStop Integrity S-series is widely regarded as
the leader in high-performance, continuous availability, UNIX-based, carrier-grade computing in the
Internet-fueled communications industry. The new server family, code-named the NonStop Integrity
SA-series, will become the next-generation S-series and will continue to deliver all of the advantages
customers have come to expect from NonStop Integrity carrier-grade systems, specifically unmatched
hardware fault tolerance, scalability, continuous availability and data integrity. For more information on

support investments ensure Compaq customers that OpenVMS AlphaServers will remain a key
component of Compaq's solutions for unmatched mission-critical computing for the next five years and
beyond. The five year OpenVMS roadmap is designed to provide solutions that address customers'
growing needs for system resource flexibility, server consolidation and ease of managing computer
