Xylan sees Asia Pacific sale up in 1999
SINGAPORE, Feb 1 (Reuters) - U.S. computer network switch maker Xylan Corp Inc said on Monday it expected its Asian business to be 16 to 17 percent of its global revenue in 1999 compared with 14 percent last year.

Michael Ang, vice president for Asia Pacific gave the forecast at a news conference to open the firm's new US$2 million regional headquarters in Singapore.

''About 16 to 17 percent,'' he said, when asked how much he saw the crisis-hit region contributing to global totals.

''The worst affected countries like South Korea are bottoming out, and in the second half we should see more business coming out of these countries,'' he said.

Xylan had predicted US$50-60 million of turnover would come from the Asia Pacific region in the year to December 31, 1998.

Xylan attributed its growth expectations to soaring demand for new products from blue chip clients and governments in the region, and said it could see as much as a 50 percent increase in sales from countries in the Association of South East Asian Nations.

''There's tremendous opportunity in Singapore alone. We estimate we can double business this year alone,'' Steve Kim, Xylan chairman, president and chief executive said.
