Rude- (I don't remember which of us came up with it first) but in one of the articles I read this weekend (don't have a URL), I saw confirmation that Compaq and Dell are (basically) gaining share at the expense of all the rest...

Also, if you recall, a few months ago I advanced the thought that Gateway could slide into a nice #2 slot in the consumer space, and make good gains as well and that going forward....we would basically see (in the consumer space) 1-Compaq, 2- Gateway....and the rest trying to figure out a way to make money (and not be very successful) and (on the corporate side) 1-Dell, 2- Compaq, and most everyone else getting creamed........(For Gateway to really become of force, of course, they have to figure out a way to provide (even a Falcon-ess) challenge to Dell in the corporate market...so far, they can't even get off the ground)...

This quarter's numbers seem to also indicate that IBM and HP are going to (going forward) only grow at the market multiple (or below)...not really challenging Dell and Compaq...going only for the profitable bids...only making a little profit....and steadily losing market share (or trending relatively flat) while Compaq and Dell gain gobs (of marketshare)..

Based on what I've seen, this train is on the track....Have you (or anyone else) read anything to dispute this?

Finally, one gripe..EP and boys need to be careful with shooting out announcements every 3 or 4 days...In my view, it has a dilutive effect, and winds up making each announcement seem less important (than it is)...I am still a bit raw with how the AltaVista announcement was thrown out there (just looked a bit unprepared to me)...now the Prosignia announcement....why didn't this come out on Friday?...sniffs a little of pumping the stock (which is obviously not working today)...I don't think EP needs to do this sort of thing to get investors piling back in here...just execute this quarter and it should take care of itself...

I still believe that Compaq in a good position for the year and beyond.....Thanks again for all your wisdom...
