>>did you go ahead with the 3com modem?<<

No, I got an Acer modem that doesn't give me real good speeds. I can't upgrade from KFlex to v.90.

>>the test doesn't look all that simple. was it?<<

The test is EXTREMELY simple. You just make a connection using HyperTerminal and the phone number they give you (847/262-6000) (pretty much the same as configuring "dial-up networking") and then once you are connected, you fill in the prompts as instructed on the 3com site:

First Name = line (hit "Enter")
Last Name = test (hit Enter)

And wait for it to do the test. It will tell you whether you are 56K capable or not. then you have the option of seeing the test results. If you want to see them hit "Enter" for the first page, and "Enter" again for the second page.

To get out at any time just type the letter "g" and hit "Enter".

If you go too slow it will disconnect you after 3 min.
