Corel Commends BSA for Uncovering Europe's Largest-Ever Case of Software Counterfeiting

Corel Corporation would like to commend
the Business Software Alliance (BSA), which represents world-leading
software developers like Corel, for shutting down the largest software
counterfeit and Internet sales operation ever found in the European Union.

The operation was based in Denmark, and contained 125,000 CD-ROMS full of
US$237 million worth of BSA members' software, including software made by
Corel.

"We stand in full support of the BSA and applaud their efforts in shutting
down this huge operation," said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief
executive officer of Corel. "The illegal copy and sale of software is an
inherent problem in this industry and we are doing everything in our power
to encourage people to go the proper route and use legal software."

After receiving a number of calls on its Hotline, the BSA investigated and
discovered that the CDs, containing software by Corel, Adobe, Autodesk,
Microsoft and Symantec, were being sold on the Internet with the labels
"Best of Internet," "Silverado" and "Vegas." It then turned the case over
to the Danish National Computer Crime Unit who are now questioning several
suspects.

"The BSA is working hard to reduce the distribution of illegal software
programs on the Internet," said Beth Scott, BSA's communications director
in Europe. "This is very encouraging to the team we have working
exclusively towards eliminating Internet piracy, and encouraging to the
people in the industry who realize the impact this sort of thing has on
employment and revenue generation."
