Actually you can take advantage of this sometimes. I hold a Trust unit until the actual day of record or two days before and sell it. The reason is that most people look at the date the "dividend" is to be paid and think they will still get it. They then ramp the stock up hoping to get the dividend(which they don't) and I sell into it. The satisfying thing is the person that gets the dividend is "ME" because I was the shareholder of record even though I sold 2 days before!!!
