Tom,

Don't want to debate crime and punishment here (would love to at another time/place), but your comments brought to mind advice I was once given to the effect that I should invest in what I know and be careful when venturing beyond my area of expertise! While I don't know you personally (we did meet last year at a P&F seminar, though), it is with all due respect that I suggest that, as it is with stock picking, generalizing about politics is a sport fraught with danger.

I don't know what your convict-friend was referring to regarding republicans, but if he, as I suspect, was complaining about the mandatory minimum sentence he undoubtedly was serving, it may interest you both to know that he can thank the democrats (under Tip O'Neil) for that little innovation. You might also be interested to know that an ever-increasing number of judges and prison administrators in this country (not a liberal bunch I think you would agree) are opposed to this practice. I could go on, but, alas, this is not the time or place.

Let me end by saying that it ain't hard to say you're tough on crime. If a politician wants to get elected, it requires no uncommon courage to take a free shot at an amorphous group of non-voting societal rejects. But just notice who's the first to cry foul or scream bloody-murder about injustice when his keister, or his son's or friend's, is caught in the vice. Then, they are about as tough on crime as those thrice married, adulterous conservative repubs are all for "family values".
